10 Ways to Support the Occupy Movement

There are many things you can do to be part of this growing movement—and only some of them involve sleeping outside.

The #OccupyWallStreet movement continues to spread with more than 1,500 sites. More and more people are speaking up for a society that works for the 99 percent, not just the 1 percent.

Here are 10 recommendations from the YES! Magazine staff for ways to build the power and momentum of this movement. Only two of them involve sleeping outside:

1. Show up at the occupied space near you.

Use this link to find the Facebook page of an occupation near you. If you can, bring a tent or tarp and sleeping bag, and stay. Or just come for a few hours. Talk to people, participate in a General Assembly, hold a sign, help serve food. Learn about the new world being created in the occupied spaces.

2. Start your own occupation.

Use this Meetup site. Or call together friends, members of your faith group, school, or community group. Reach out to people from parts of your community you don’t normally work with. Unexpected alliances keep the movement from getting labeled as partisan or representing only some people.

3. Support those who are occupying.

Most sites need food, warm clothes, blankets, tarps, sleeping bags, communications gear, and money. Many need people to do loads of laundry, to help with medical care, to provide legal support, to serve food, and to spread the word. Some people call in pizza orders from nearby vendors. Support the folks at Liberty Square in New York here, or check in with your local occupiers to see what they need.

As we discover a community of people who are experiencing similar hardship, humiliation turns into compassion for others and for ourselves.

4. Speak out. Get into the debates and the teach-ins.

Many occupation sites have workshops and discussions on critical issues of our time. Get into the discussion. Bring your expertise and reading materials to share. YES! Magazine is offering free copies of the current New Livelihood issue to occupied sites (request them by emailing JobsIssue@yesmagazine.org). Bring the discussions to other groups you are part of. Listen to perspectives you haven’t heard before. This process represents a critical, but under-reported side of the movement: People are shifting from being passive, frustrated observers of politics to  active, powerful players. Instead of waiting for our leaders to do the right thing, people from all walks of life are becoming leaders. It makes us unstoppable.

5. Share your story.

Post how you’re part of the 99 percent on Facebook, Twitter, blogs, or in print. Through this movement, people are discovering others who are also losing jobs and homes, who are overwhelmed by debt or working a dead-end job. Through this sharing, humiliation turns into compassion and self-respect. And it builds understanding of the sources and the impacts of our crisis: A Wall Street system that funnels wealth to the top 1 percent is leaving the rest of us behind. Community plus insight makes us powerful.

6. Be the media.

Show up with your video recorder, camera phone, or laptop and share the stories of the occupation. You can download a selection of posters donated by graphic designers and spread them around. Highlight the human dimension of the protests. It is harder for critics to disparage a movement when people see the faces of those involved.

7. Name the meaning of this moment.

What will make the world better for the 99 percent? How has the power of the 1 percent gotten in the way of your hopes and dreams? Make a sign, write a blog, update your Facebook page, or speak out on the issue that means the most to you. Include the phrase, “I am the 99 percent.”

8. Insist that public officials treat the occupations with respect.

The eviction of the Liberty Square occupation on Wall Street was averted by massive public resistance from those in the square and from others. Other occupations also need support. The 99 percent don’t have the money, political access, and media empires of the 1 percent; the occupations are one of the few ways we are building power. Ask your local officials to respect people's right to assembly.

Naomi Klein at OWS by Marnie JoyceWhat Can Stop the One Percent?
Naomi Klein: There’s only one thing that can block the wish list of the one percent, and it’s a very big thing:
the rest of us.

9. Study and teach nonviolent techniques.

There are many examples of outside provocateurs who spark violent incidents that can discredit nonviolent movements such as this. The corporate media is hungry for violent images. (There’s already been an example of an admitted provocateur from the right-wing "American Spectator" who provoked pepper spraying at the National Air & Space Museum). Learn how to lovingly and firmly interrupt and contain violence, and teach what you know. Here are some resources.

10. Be resilient.

This movement is here for the long term. Some efforts may fade because of cold weather or harsh police responses. Others may self-destruct through faulty process or violent outbreaks. The movement may be idealistic, but it won’t be ideal. Don’t get disillusioned; the demand for a society that serves the 99 percent won’t go away. The movement may morph, but it has become unstoppable. Help it evolve.

The genie is out of the bottle. People will no longer accept the systematic transfer of wealth and power from we the people to the 1 percent. In this remarkable, leaderless movement, each one of the 99 percent who gets involved helps shape history.

99%

As we, the 99%, mobilise to fight social injustice, we must not forget the plight of nonhuman animals – the most numerous and most vulnerable of all the victims of global capitalism.

Their industrialised enslavement, exploitation and murder is driven by the greed of the same 1% that profits from human inequalities and injustices and the escalating destruction of the earth.

The domination and oppression of humans, nonhumans and the earth are closely intertwined. None can be free until all are free. We must struggle for total liberation – of all animals and the earth.

The Declaration by Occupy Wall Street includes the statement:

“They have profited off of the torture, confinement, and cruel treatment of countless nonhuman animals, and actively hide these practices”.

I am hopeful all the 'occupies' will denounce institutionalised animal abuse & the forces bowing to pressure from the 1%.

As we return to our communities from this occupation to engage in the direct action which must follow, please consider what action can be taken to help stop this torture of our fellow beings.

SUGGESTION FUTURE AGENDA

The 99% Americans have given up our constitutional rights by allowing our selected congressional representatives to ignore the will of the people. Now is the time to put our country back into the hands of THE PEOPLE MAJORITY. The political ball and momentum is in our court. IN EACH STATE WE MUST FIRE THE CURRENT CONGRESSIONAL REPRESENTATIVES (BOTH HOUSE AND SENATE) AND CHOOSE REPRESENTATIVES THAT LISTEN TO THE 99% MAJORITY.

Do not make this movement about animals. The 99% movement runs the risk of being derailed by unfocused goals. Stick to economic and financial injustice for goodness sake and I will not eat a cheeseburger for one week. That's a promise

Hi Carl the movement is about what we want it to be & it's about joining the dots, people (who are animals too), animals & the earth, so it's not about making it any one thing, it's about everything! cheers julie

animal cruelty

Posted by Nancy at Nov 09, 2011 10:13 AM
Carl, you are absolutely right! As much as we would love to help the animals, we must help humankind first and then we can focus on other important issues...one thing at a time. Animals are not going to take care of our families and our future.

While the 99% rally to preserve and extend democracy in this country, let's not forget that many of us make up the 1% of the world as a whole. Here, on my blog This Lively Earth, is <a href="http://thislivelyearth.com/[…]/">"Why I support Occupy Wall Street."</a>

This is a fantastic list. So many people (myself included) are uncertain about how we can be most effective, but even just spreading the word and helping to educate others is a huge help.

My partner and I attended the Occupy Berlin protest this weekend and it was such an incredible experience. We shared our photos and experience here:

If the 99% keeps demanding change, eventually it's going to happen.

Banking Industry behavior

Posted by Maria R at Oct 17, 2011 07:08 PM
We all know that money talks in American politics, and what the financial industry’s money has been saying is that it will punish any politician who dares to criticize that industry’s behavior, no matter how gently as evidenced by the way Wall Street money has now abandoned President Obama in favor of Mitt Romney. Dogmatic Partisanship does not allow for productive conversations and compromise. Occupy Wall Street Calls out the Financial Industry will they retaliate somehow, someway….?
Americans understand what the banks and financial institutions did to the economy. We bailed them out, and then banks went about evicting people from their homes. Since the 1980’s the financial industry grew faster than the rest of the economy. This was a deliberate policy of deregulation that continued right up to the eve of the 2008 crisis. The same political forces that promoted financial deregulation fostered overall inequality in a variety of ways, undermining organized labor, doing away with the “outrage constraint” that used to limit executive paychecks.
If we voice our opinions collectively they must hear us. Get out and Vote!!

tonight is the first time I have used this posting idea and so my previous post came up a little short.
I am the 99%. I support the occupy cause.
Besides objecting to what we have, we must also offer solutions to the problem. I would really like to have everyone view the secret of oz/you tube as I firmly believe that the solution lies within that documentary.
If you watch and agree then pass it on. Everyone should see this documentary.

Hey Donna
Sounds like everything is OK in your world and that you are just absolutely content with the way things are. By the tone of your posting you must think that all the protesters are nothing but a bunch of druggies. From everything I have seen on the news etc. I believe they are anything but. However, close your mind and let the bankers of the world rule us instead of the ones we elect. I think you don't really believe in any kind of true democracy. See my earlier post about watching The secret of OZ and open your mind to a world better for all instead of a select few.

policemen are citizens, too

Posted by David Self at Nov 08, 2011 04:37 PM
Our Occupiers (hooray for them!) have an opportunity to tell the surrounding policemen, OVER AND OVER AGAIN, that they are US citizens too, and should think about themselves as US citizens, not thought police suckered by big money. POLICEMEN ARE US CITIZENS, TOO. They took oaths to support the constitution—remind them—not Big Money that owns politicians such as mayors and commissioners. Tell our policemen this, OVER AND OVER!

I would love to do most of your list, but the nearest Occupy movement to where I live is 20 miles away, and I don't have a car. The nearest bus stop is 9 miles away.

I am trying to get something going where I live, but I can't find people who are interested.

I would encourage the movement to branch out a bit more instead of concentrating in big cities. Some of us are not in big cities and are getting left out.

An Alternative to Capitalism (if the people knew about it, they would demand it)

Several decades ago, Margaret Thatcher claimed: "There is no alternative". She was referring to capitalism. Today, this negative attitude still persists.

I would like to offer an alternative to capitalism for the American people to consider. Please click on the following link. It will take you to an essay titled: "Home of the Brave?" which was published by the Athenaeum Library of Philosophy:

Focus and purpose

Posted by Will at Nov 28, 2011 01:52 AM
Just bitching about something will not get results what is needed is a focal point to draw the people (you and I )together under a common cause.I have a suggestion for all of you!
Our government does work they are the 1% and they look after there own interests! If you do not believe this look at what is happening right now in congress.Grid lock by the party.
If you look at the constitution you will not find the mention of party politic. What you will find is a government supposed to be( BY ) THE PEOPLE ( OF )THE PEOPLE ( FOR )THE PEOPLE. What we have is of the party by the party for the party.
The only thing we have left to fight with is our ballots.
What we need is choice which we do not have on our ballot we must elect the people that are registered on on that ballot.
We need another choice that being NONE OF THE ABOVE!there IS ONLY ONE PLACE FOR THIS VOTE IT WILL HAVE TO BE A WRITE IN.
Let us tell congress we disapprove of what they are and what they are not doing. They do not represent the people.
You have a voice now use it to get people together to rebuild who we are, none of the above repre3sent our interest in this government, Let us work to get back to for the people by the people
and of the people. Let us occupy the voting booth and let us find government by us not the 1%

a suggestion

Please believe I think and feel the Occupy Movement is ASTRONOMICALLY FANTASTIC!!!

However, there is only one thing, besides "the rest of us" (not me but those that would stop the movement out of fear or pressure) that WILL shut down this movement. That is HEALTH and SAFETY CODES. Somehow there has to be a way to dispose of both human and animal waste more efficiently and in a way that that won't jeopardize the health and safety of all.

Already there has been an outbreak of Parvo because people keep their animals with them "in residence". This is not a good idea. Maybe for a day or two but not camped out like this. We must focus on the rights of the 99% first.

Perhaps, along with the need for supporters to help with food distribution, laundry, medical attention and such, some could open their homes for Animal Babysitting.

Our pets are our joy and family. In many cases, they might be our only joy and family. And I'm sure all pet owners will agree. I myself have a large, enclosed yard, am unemployed and at the moment could help out. Maybe others who are in similar dire straits, with a little extra time on their hands, could help with this problem. Or another way is to be a dog walker in the mornings, afternoons and evenings to a local park or some other place away from the encampments. Take plastic bags and properly dispose them.

Offhand I do not have a solution to the waste problem but feel that this issue could possibly give "the rest of us" (those that have negative feelings toward OWS, not me) a reason to persuade themselves even further to stop the movement.

The LAST thing we want is to give the "powers that be" another tactic to dismantle a movement that is sure to gain more supporters and make a real difference.
