Two Points for the Tea Party. Now What?

We can all agree that we’ve got deficit and spending problems. But where do we go from here?

The Tea Party has it right on two points: America has a deficit problem and the federal government is spending recklessly on things it should not be funding. But the solutions the Tea Party suggests are ones favored by its funders, the billionaire Koch brothers. Those are not solutions that work for most of us.

Fortunately, there are signs that the country is waking up to the need for solutions that promote the interests of the vast majority of Americans, not just those of the right-wing advocates of wealth concentration. In 2010, the tax-time conversation centered on complaints that Americans are overtaxed. This year the conversation centered on wealthy tax dodgers, including reports in corporate media such as The New York Times and Bloomberg BusinessWeek. Corporate tax dodgers like Bank of America have been the targets of lively protests across the country.

In simple truth the deficit problem can be readily resolved by eliminating tax giveaways to the rich and cutting government’s most wasteful and unnecessary spending.

History gives the lie to the story that taxing the wealthy destroys the economy. In 1961, the top U.S. income-tax rate was 91 percent. Our strong middle class made us the envy of the world, a single wage earner could comfortably support a family, we were the undisputed world industrial champion, Wall Street mostly financed real investment, and the federal debt was a bit under $300 billion.

Now, the top income-tax rate is 35 percent, wealth is obscenely concentrated, the middle class is badly eroded, we are no longer an industrial power, two wage-earners struggle to keep food on the table, Wall Street makes money gambling instead of funding real investment, and the growing federal debt tops $13 trillion. Advocates of wealth concentration who claim that taxing the rich is bad for the nation are on weak ground.

“Unnecessary Austerity; Unnecessary Government Shutdown,” a report by the D.C.-based Institute for Policy Studies, notes that in 1961 small business owners and individuals paid twice as much in federal income taxes as large corporations. In 2011, they will pay nearly five times as much. The report estimates that eliminating tax giveaways to the super-rich and the largest corporations would raise $4 trillion within a decade and largely resolve the deficit crisis.

On the spending side, the U.S. military is the number one example of  wasteful spending. We face no credible conventional military threat, yet devote more than half of the federal discretionary budget to the military, an amount roughly equal to the military spending of the rest of the world’s governments combined. Most of our military establishment could be disbanded without compromising our real security and the resources could be redirected to reducing the deficit and dealing with far greater threats to our security, such as climate chaos and dependence on Middle East oil. Other obvious opportunities for cost cutting are expenditures for Wall Street bank bailouts and subsidies to the oil and pharmaceutical industries, among others.

So, yes: We have a deficit problem and a spending problem and there are obvious solutions to both. It is up to us as citizens to demand that politicians act on these solutions and to bring them to the fore of the political debates in the upcoming 2012 election cycle.

Congress just approved 119 billion to the Pentagon. Perhaps Congress should vote in Laws-to have the Pentagon have ther own account as of- STOP given it all for FREE -cashcow fools.

"BUDGET SURPLUS ACCOUNT" ONLY SPEND WHAT THEY HAVE EARNED IN PROFITS.""As in " sells, trade, loans with interest returns then put that profit back into surplus account as interest grows, so can ther spending amount. Other nations wars problems are costly, our military aid, supplys, resources all given in "FREE FOREIGN AID" WHEN ALL THIS TIME OUR PENTAGON SHOULD OF BEEN -LOAN ALL OF IT WITH INTEREST RETURNS, GET PAYED USA- THEN THER WOULD NOT BE A DEBT OF 14 TRILLION. WE WOULD HAVE A PLUS OF 5 TRILLION.

1-Raise taxes just 1% on all paychecks of $100,000.00/up. that should takecare of Medicare, do Not tax small business. Paychecks only.
2- STOP all FREE foreign aid-unless its a "loan with interest returns. loan our resources-get payed USA. Get out of DEBT.
STOP the CASHCOW of Americans taxpayers lives. loan, trade, sell.
3.-Lower Mortgage rates, and interest returns on "bank hogs" Sell off all those ""forecloser homes"- put a FREEZE on Banks until they payback ther debt to Government.
4. Not all rich corporations Created Jobs, and lowering taxes again for them- how that work'n so far. unemployment is still high. Therby claiming lost of jobs if rich gets taxed is "not always true. but given Business a "tax break" to hire AMERICAN WORKERS" maybe inputed, and ""TAXES ON THER PAYCHECKS ONLY JUST 1 OR 2% IS THE ONLY WAY TO INSURE THE nonDOWNFAIL OF OUR deficit AGAIN.
5. lEAVE sOCIAL sECURITY ALONE-ITS A 3% INVEST TRUST FUND-sEC. 201 ACT. ITS OUR MONEY, stop BORROWING FROM IT -THEN MAYBE IT WILL WORK

referendums on banning car companies and magnetizing protest shields to negate obsolete steel bullets assualt rifles is next. so you want peace well you need volunteers to demonstrate standing still taking small arms fire is as courageous as getting a medal of valour. in fact medals should be issuesd to peace protesters. web badges can beissued easily or smiths can make them. smithing class to make peace medals. perhaps giving the purple heart to peace protesters could happen.

Freedom is not free- Taxpayer should NOT have to pay for other nations wars

Tea Party

The Mad Hatters hit a number of sensitive spots that appeal to the worst instincts of a variety of people. These are primarily things that diminish the point of people gathering together in a society to help each other, i.e. negative. Curmudgeonly.
But such Knee-Jerks don't combine to a coherent set of policies. Just try combining a series of Palin's stuff so they cover all subjects and still make sense.

Rerferendums seem to hit that

referendums to ban car companies can help the democratic process by citizens voting on whether to ban cars or car companies.
you will notice permission is not asked in the car ads if citizens had desire for cars.sure i sound petualant writing this but democracy is where the opinion of citizens is sought and respected.

Fraud on the americans taxpayers

Is it Odd- that all we heard for 8months from " prosperityPlanners-budgeteers- that must cut Medicare-must cut Social Security, but yet one dime of ther congress Retirement penson plan is still growing- but yet government has borrowed from Social Security 4 times already.
It is odd- that 119 b given to other nations to train ther troops, and Congress as the BS to say Americans overtaxpayers are to blame.
When all this time in Kuwait-Iraq-Afganistan-Libyan- Our Pentagon-defense companys could of been-bargining,trade-sell suppys, loan with interest returns- get payed usa-get out of debt plans.SELL,TRADE-LOAN OUR SUPPLYS-RESOURCES- MONEY-GET A RETURN.

Raise taxes on big paychecks Just 2%-and input a Contract tax on Defense co.- stop given our supplys for free. -sell it.
PUT that PROfit into a Budget surplus account-to help PAY for (if a have to)other nations war problems--EARN PROFIT-THEN SPEND.
STOP USEING AMERICANS HEALTHCARE MONEY TO FUND THE PENTAGON- WAR GAMES.
Afterall- if - Afganistan-kuwait-Iraaq-Libyans have hidden money- oil resources-then WHY are we giving FREE-foreign aid????
