Cleveland, often ranked one of the top five poorest cities in the U.S., has produced a model for creating a sustainable economy and revitalizing suffering neighborhoods. The goal is not just to create jobs, but also to build wealth and anchor capital in the local communities.
The Evergreen Cooperative creates for-profit green companies that are owned on a cooperative model. Employees own a stake in the company and have the opportunity to build equity and long-term careers. The companies hire from the surrounding communities thereby reinvesting in and building up the local economy.
